Overview:
Our English I Pre-AP Class will largely follow the district-mandated curriculum SpringBoard to support college readiness and follow our state of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The course is designed to not only prepare students for the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) but also future AP courses and, ultimately, college.
Pre-AP English I introduces students to the rigors, expectations, and terminology of advanced placement study in English Language Arts. Students will be trained to analyze literature; how to draw meaning and significance from a writer’s choices. With the understanding that all texts are rhetorical, students will be taught how to both recognize and use rhetorical strategies (including stylistic devices). Considerable time will also be spent mastering the rules of the English language, improving composition skills, and developing a mature vocabulary.

•Unit 1: Coming of Age
•Unit 2: Defining Style (Tim Burton)
•Unit 3: Exploring Poetic Voices / Critical Reading
•Unit 4: Interpreting Drama Through Performance (Romeo and Juliet)
•Unit 5: Coming of Age Amidst Controversy (To Kill a Mockingbird) –Purchase book on own
