GCISD’s 25 Book Challenge
Throughout the 2014-15 school year, GCISD’s 3-12th grade students will be invited to participate in a 25 Book Challenge. Based on the challenge issued in Donalyn Miller’s popular text, The Book Whisperer, students will have the opportunity to choose at least 25 titles for independent reading. These titles must fall within certain genre categories (see below) and page counts, but choosing the titles will be up to students! Recommended Genre Categories: Realistic fiction - 4 Historical fiction - 2 Fantasy - 3 Science fiction - 1 Mystery - 1 Informational - 4 Poetry anthologies - 2 Biography, autobiography, and/or memoir - 2 Free choice - 6 Note: Teachers can modify these categories to meet their class/grade needs as long as students are still expected to read a variety of titles that are categorized as fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. General Rules: In order to count as one book, the page count must be a minimum of 100 pages. Books over 300 pages may count as two books. Teachers have the authority to adjust this if necessary. Documentation: Teachers may document student progress and submit the names of students who have completed the 25 book challenge via the following Google Form. Students will receive district recognition for their efforts! Teachers/schools may also recognize students in creative ways (names scrolling on campus TV screens, newsletter shout-outs, bulletin board displays, etc…). Reading is expected to be done both at home and at school. Documentation of reading is expected to take place within students’ ELA classroom. Teachers are NOT expected to have students complete book reports upon completing each book.. The purpose of the reading is recreational - to promote a love of reading! Teachers ARE expected to draw upon students’ reading experiences for classroom instruction and reading reflections. Students and teachers are encouraged to tweet about their reading at ded |
